Abbey-Cameron Tenants and Residents Association

Abbey-Cameron Tenants and Residents Association Press Notice

NEW TENANTS AND RESIDENTS GROUP IN INVERNESS

At a very well-attended Public Meeting in Merkinch Primary School, Inverness, on 30 June it was resolved to set up a new Tenants and Residents Association covering Abbey Court, Abban Street, Carse Road, Cameron Road and Cameron Square. The new group, to be known as Abbey-Cameron Tenants and Residents Association (ACTRA) has adopted a Constitution and elected a nine-strong Executive Committee. The Chairman is Alexander JM MacLeod, with Ivor R Bisset as Secretary and James Sutherland as Treasurer. It's aims are two-fold: to safeguard and promote the interests of tenants and residents in the area and to strive for equal rights on matters relating to housing, environment, social matters and community well-being; and secondly, the provision, maintenance and improvement of such public amenities as are conducive to the protection and enhancement of the environment. Additionally, advice and guidance will be available for tenants regarding the radical proposal to transfer their tenancies from Highland Council to a new not-for-profit Housing Association. Membership of the Association is subscription-free and is open to all residents in the area over 16 years of age, both tenants and owner-occupiers.

The formation of the Association was enthusiastically endorsed by the Highland Councillor for Muirtown Ward, Mrs Christina M Cumming. "This Association is the culmination of a high degree of solid commitment and sheer hard graft on the part of some residents," said Mrs Cumming. "They can be fully persuaded that any help I can give them is theirs for the asking and I very much look forward to working with them." The new group is supported by Highland Council, the Northern Constabulary and is also welcomed by the local parish Church. The Chairman confirmed that application will now be made to Highland Council for formal registration and funding. "Once these matters are settled we will meet again to decide the way forward. Had it not been for Mrs Cumming's practical and moral support our hopes would have been well and truly dashed," he added.

This project is being part-financed by the European Union under the Inverness and Nairn CED programme.Europe and Scotland. Making it work together.
